Married in Nevada between the ages of 20-24? Now in your 30s? Then you are likely to be divorced or
currently experiencing a divorce. Although most estimates say that 40-50% of all marriages in the United
States end in divorce, the distribution isn’t even. Certain groups and circumstances, for whatever reason,
seem to result in a higher rate of divorce.

Divorce rates can vary substantially between states. The rate of divorce in California isn’t as high
as its neighbor Nevada, which has had the highest divorce rate in the country for the last 20 years.
Nonetheless, the rate in California is higher than in many other states. The lowest rates are found
in the Northeast.

Marriages occurring when spouses are between the ages of 20 and 24 seem to be especially prone to divorce.
One possible reason is that this age range is one where many people are in college, or have recently
graduated. The stresses of student life are substantial, and most students are of limited means. Marriage
requires a more substantial commitment financially and emotionally than some people may be able to manage
in these circumstances.

In contrast, those who wait until they are between 30 and 40 years old enjoy the lowest chance of divorce.
Interestingly, the average age for a first divorce, for both men and women, is around age 30. Second
divorces tend to occur around age 40. Each subsequent divorce increases the likelihood of another one.
