Women and child support

Posted on May 14th, 2012 No Comments

The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers has released the results of a survey regarding women and child support payments.

The results show that in the past three years, the amount women making monthly child support payments has increased. Of the lawyers that were surveyed, 56 percent of them noted that they saw a large increase in the number of women supporting their children after a divorce.

During that same three year period, 44 percent of the attorneys also saw a rise in women making alimony payments to their former spouses. Although, men still earn more than women across the board in the United States, a shift in financial income in modern households may contribute to this overall child support transition.

Last November, the exaggerated basketball player was told he was in contempt of court for falling behind on his payments by $860,000. He could face up to 20 days in jail if he is found guilty of this charge. Child support difficult to obtain from Native America parents

Posted on August 16th, 2011 No Comments

California mothers find it difficult to collect child support that they are owed from Native American fathers because many tribal governments do not enforce the court ordered payments and do not garnish wages of bank accounts of delinquent parents.

The California Department of Child Support Services does not track the number of tribal governments that do not enforce child support payments, but a chief judge for the Hoopa Valley Tribe stated that only 20 of the 103 federally recognized tribes in California do have formal enforcement systems in place.

The judge also stated that Native American tradition suggests that tribe members must always take care of the young and the elderly so formal programs are not always needed. Across the state of California, nearly $1 million of owed child support is not collected every year.
