Emotional Stages of Divorce

When undergoing a divorce, there is a broad range of emotions that one may feel about their situation. Like grieving for the loss of a loved one, divorcees often experience similar emotional stages. When overwhelmed, it may help to remind yourself that you are not alone and that this stage will pass, as it has done for others.

If you are currently dealing with the legalities of a divorce, it is important that you have an experienced family law attorney on your side. Contact the Oceanside family law lawyers of Fischer & Van Thiel, LLP. Call (760) 621-7101 today to schedule a free initial consultation.

From Denial to Acceptance

Most married couples who go through the legal and psychological stages of a divorce experience similar reactions. While everyone is different, the emotional stages of divorce often include:

  • Denial of the reality of the situation. When coming to terms with major life changes, it is common to experience denial.
  • After denial, many divorcees become angry or resentful. Whether this negativity is directed at themselves or their former spouses, this stage may continue for a significant amount of time.
  • Many, but not all, couples will try to compromise with one another in an attempt to preserve their marriage or family. Unfortunately, at this stage of the relationship, it is unlikely that compromises will be met and satisfy both parties.
  • Many recently divorced people will go through a phase of sadness or depression. Although painful, this is a normal part of grieving the end of a marriage.
  • Eventually, divorced people grow to accept the reality of their former marriages and are able to live at peace with the separation.

While this reveals the psychological progression of many divorcees, it is by no means set in stone. Each person experiences life differently; however, growing to accept your divorce is a crucial part of recovery.
