  3. Family Law: What You Should Know About Divorces in California

An interesting topic that you might like to know about is how common divorce is in California. Did you know that Orange County, for example, has one of the highest divorce rates in the country? There, around 33 people seek a divorce daily, according to a 2012 report.

In 2018, statistics have shown a decrease in California divorces, but that’s not to say that it isn’t still happening at a high rate. The actual divorce rate in the state is approximately 41 percent of couples on their first marriage.

Why do people divorce?

This is one of the main questions that need to be addressed. Why do people walk away from their spouses or focus on moving on with someone else? There are a few reasons, actually. These include:

  • Financial trouble
  • Affairs
  • Addiction
  • Children (as part of an unhappy relationship)

With financial trouble, one spouse might hold the other responsible for making bad financial decisions. Similarly, having an affair could destroy trust in the relationship and lead to a divorce. Addiction, now common in many parts of the United States thanks to opioids, illicit drugs and alcohol, for instance, also threaten relationships. Maybe most saddening is that many relationships end because of extending them long past their prime because of having children together.

In any case, a divorce is a life-changing decision, and it’s not something to take lightly. If it’s something you’re considering, it’s a good idea to talk to your attorney before you take steps to speak with your spouse. The right preparation could save you time, energy and frustration in the future.
